The phenomenon of biophobia assumes the existence of cognitive rules that influence perceptions, sensations and reactions to potentially dangerous stimuli. By questioning the biological and social conditioning factors, the aim was to characterize the social representation of biophobia. An online questionnaire included 485 participants, whose predominance of fear attributed to spiders, snakes, rats and bats corresponded to the biophobic expectation of genetic origin. Several animals were associated with ‘nuisances’, with the aversive feeling not limiting social activities and the fear was recognized as momentary. The analyses supported two lines of interpretation: the ‘hypothesis of little contact’ and the ‘hypothesis of access to qualified information’, whose acceptance by environmental bioethics, as a frontier area between the humanities and biomedicine, emerged as a potential for transposing anthropocentric/utilitarian and speciesist perspectives to biocentric/ecocentric perspectives.
