Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the role played by tolerance in international relations from 1648 onwards. Tolerance is a value that, to a large extent, guided the construction of the new order that emerged from the collapse of the medieval order. The rationality of the concept of tolerance proved to be coherent with the forces of the Enlightenment and in the same way that it served as a basis for the pacification of religious conflicts, it also served to guide the understanding of principles that could base a true Society of States. This article intends to provoke a reflection, albeit indirectly, on the possibilities and limits of the value of tolerance for our world. Could international practices still be fixed to this value in the face of the deterioration of International Law, the decline of institutions, the emergence of new global dynamics and the intensification of violent conflicts such as Israel versus Hamas or Russia's war to incorporate Ukrainian territories?
