The first training course for football referees to officiate official matches in Rio Grande do Sul was promoted by the Federação Rio-Grandense de Desportos (FRGD) in 1958. The aim of this study is to understand the referee training process carried out by the FRGD, focusing on those who officiated between 1960 and 1980. To achieve this, interviews were conducted with football referees, and other sources were accessed. The interpretation of the information obtained was guided by the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Cultural History. The results indicated that football referees were drawn to refereeing through prior experience in sports, such as amateur football and youth divisions. Participation in refereeing courses provided referees, who had other professions, with the opportunity to work simultaneously in another field.
