The natural history of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (DM) has long-term complications, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy and microvascular illness. Research works DCCT and DCCT/EDIT are cohort studies that compare chronic outcomes of DM under conventional and intensive treatments, the first in DM type 2 and the last in DM type 1. Both of them are analyzed in this review, emphasizing complications on the cardiovascular system in DM type 1. It appears that maintaining blood glucose concentrations has direct relationship with long-term complications. Control and intensive treatment slows the changes in all organs usually affected. The importance of the follow-up of patients with DM type 1 should be stressed, because it can slow the development of long-term complications.Downloads
