Abstract

For the year 2010 it is estimated that there will be about 114 thousand new nonmelanoma skin cancer cases in Brazil. Basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas represent, respectively, 70% and 25% of the skin cancer types. This study intends to describe basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas in their epidemiological and histopathological variables. A retrospective study was effected based on diagnosis done by the Pathological Anatomy Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande (LAP-FURG). Identified were 196 cases of basal cell carcinoma and 97 of squamous cell carcinoma, having 65 and 70 as the age median. Regarding basal cell carcinoma, the male individuals prevailed (59,2%) and in anatomic parts with direct solar exposition (84%), especially the face (63,6%). As for the squamous cell carcinoma it also presented a higher rate in these body parts (90,5%). From the professional occupations’ point of view, agriculture and cattle raising workers represented 19,8% of the cases of basal cell carcinoma and 32,7% of the squamous cell carcinoma. The histopathological type ulcerate represented 54,2% of the basal cell carcinoma cases and the well differentiated 66,2% for squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas presented, respectively, surgical margin free of cancer in 72,3% and 68,7% of the cases. For both types of skin cancer most of the cases were in white skin individuals, with ages ranging 70 to 79, in body parts which had higher solar exposition and whose professional occupations had no protection against the Sun. Approximately 30% of the surgical margins were with residual cancer.
