Abstract

This article addresses pioneering studies and theories that shaped the field of migration studies. I have selected four intellectuals born in the late nineteenth century, whose experiences in dynamic, industrialised urban contexts influenced their views on human mobility: Ernst Ravenstein, Robert Park, Georg Simmel, and Rudolph Heberle. Their writings reflect attempts to understand unprecedented social changes and demographic shifts, marked by industrialisation and cultural transformations. Without judging theoretical limitations through contemporary knowledge, the focus is to comprehend how their research expressed the concerns and interpretations of their time, linked to specific economic and social realities. These works, produced in a still pre-systematic research context, represent efforts to decipher migration, revealing how the authors’ intellectual trajectories intertwined with the dynamics of the world they observed. These scholars provided significant insights still utilised in contemporary debates on human mobility.
