Abstract

Natural resources conservation is a major aspect to assure ecosystems sustainability, a thorough evaluation of the local productive chain spectrum searching for solutions that can enable supply environmental and socioeconomic demands. The study was carried out by interviewing organic farmers at the green markets, administering questionnaires. A total of 19 farmers from the cities Cangucu, Pelotas, Morro Redondo, Arroio do Padre and Turucu were included. Among the reasons for choosing the organic methodology, 68% indicate life quality improvement and health concerns. The Environmental Education National Program (PNEA) states about non-formal Environmental Education (Law nº 9.795/99, chapter II) that the Public Sector must encourage a "environmental responsiveness among farmers". The study aims to evaluate environmental education (EE) as a tool to achieve that responsiveness. EE must be recognized as a permanent learning process that values several knowledge aspects and brings a local and global awareness to citizens (JACOBI, 2003). More than solving conflicts or preserving nature through isolated actions, the EE understands that the transformation of human relationships with the environment is within a society transformation process.
