De la prostitución y sus enfermedades en México. Rupturas y continuidades (1862-1940).

Abstract

The following work shows a brief overview of the regulation of female prostitution and the treatment of venereal diseases in Mexico that were associated with the exercise of this activity by female prostitutes. Since the 19th century, with the various hygienist policies, different treatments and medical measures have been applied that sought to prevent the spread of venereal diseases, with syphilis being the disease that was most fought against due to its wide transmission in the population, especially among women. prostitutes and their users. These measures and the experimentation of different medications continued in Mexico during the post-revolutionary period when a federal campaign against venereal diseases was established and even the massive use of antibiotics turned out to be the most effective cure for both syphilis and other diseases such as gonorrhea.
