Abstract

We live in the era of environmental catastrophes and the climate crisis. The causes and effects of the crisis directly impact those who contribute least to it, especially women and vulnerable communities who live in risk areas and are victims of social inequality and environmental injustice. For this reason, this article aims to report the condition of residents of Steigleder Occupation during the passage of an extratropical cyclone through Rio Grande do Sul on the night of June 15th and early morning of June 16th, 2023. In methodological terms, this article uses anthropology on demand and interviews two community leaders from the Steigleder Occupation. As an analytical category, it is based on decolonial ecology and the concept of socio-environmental justice. From this, it is possible to conclude that as the climate crisis advances, catastrophes like this could become increasingly recurrent, highlighting the urgency of policies to adapt to climate change.
