Abstract

This article tries to offer a way to understand the main issues of contemporary international relations departing from a problematization on the nature of forces acting in the world order. The article suggests that part of current critical international issues are products of a set of antagonistic elements in world politics which comprises, on the one hand, peacebuilding efforts, and on the other hand, the deterioration of International Law and the return to the use of force as a way of conflict resolution. These elements reveal the emergence of new patterns in the international order and are based on a discussion on the following themes: emergence of asymmetric warfare, changes in the leadership of the world order, and the deterioration of existing International Law frameworks.
