Abstract

Cholelithiasis and cholecystitis are one of the main gastrointestinal diseases. Cholelithiasis is the process of stones forming in the gallbladder and cholecystitis is the inflammation of this organ. Complications usually require hospitalization. This study
aims to analyze the time trend of hospitalizations for cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in Brazil between 2010-2020. Hospitalization rates were calculated using the ratio between the number of hospitalizations for cholelithiasis and cholecystitis according to sex, age group, sex by age group and region. The hospitalization rate was analyzed using the simple linear regression method with statistical significance set at p<0.05. There was a downward trend in the female population aged 70-79 and ≥80 (β=-11.52; p=<0.001/ β=-10.16; p=<0.001) and in the male population aged ≥80 (β=-4.72; p=<0.001). No variations were observed in the time trend for the overall rate, the overall rate by sex and by region. It can be concluded that despite the improvement in quality of life and increased life expectancy provided by the advances made by the SUS, it can be seen that females and the population in the fifth and sixth decade of life are the groups most affected by cholelithiasis and cholecystitis, due to factors such as obesity, rapid weight loss, female sex hormones, pregnancy and hyperlipidemia, with no sociodemographic or clinical characteristics between the regions analyzed in relation to the trend in hospitalizations.
