POSSESSED BY TIME: the reverberation of the Cold War context in the film Possession (1981, Andrzej Żuławski)

Abstract

Considering aspects such as the dating and location in which the film Possession (1981), by Polish director Andrzej Żuławski, is set, this article aims to propose an analysis of the relationship between the historical context of the Cold War and the aforementioned film through two specific moments: one with the French actress Isabelle Adjani, which highlights belief and trust in the future as integrated into the moment of narrative production; and the other through an image of the Berlin Wall, a landmark of global bipolarity during the four decades of conflict. In a comparative practice between the preand post-war periods against the Nazis, this research presents itself through the character of space and time as a mobilization of the Futurist artistic avant-garde and the expectations of a generation about a tomorrow subjected to the confrontation between chance and faith, present in the second half of the 20th century and internalized in the plot of Possession.
